Man dies after Solent rescue effort

A MAN knocked unconscious on a luxury motorboat off the Isle of Wight, sparking a rescue effort involving the Solent Coastguard helicopter and Cowes RNLI, has died.

Police have confirmed he was pronounced dead yesterday evening, following the incident at Osborne Bay.

A police spokesman said immediate next of kin had been informed and Hampshire Constabulary's Marine Unit was conducting initial enquiries.

"There is no information to suggest any suspicious circumstances. We would like to thank all partner agencies for their co-operation and assistance," said the spokesman.

As reported yesterday, rescuers were called to Osborne Bay at around 5pm following reports a young man had been seriously injured on board a large motorboat.

He was airlifted to St Mary's Hospital for emergency treatment by the Solent Coastguard helicopter, but died just hours later.

Another person was brought ashore to Cowes by the Gosport Independent Lifeboat and taken to hospital by ambulance.

Two other people were rescued from the water by a passing yacht, Cinnibar, but were not believed to be injured.

A Cowes RNLI spokesman said it was believed there were around a dozen people on board the luxury motorboat, the majority of whom were taken ashore by the Cowes and Gosport lifeboats.

A water-jet powered RIB was also towed from the scene.

The few people remaining on board the motorboat later brought the vessel into Cowes, escorted by a police launch.

A spokeswoman for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said the Marine Accident Investigation Branch had been informed.

* Police have named the man who died as Ryan Scott McKinlay, 36, of Gosport.

A statement, issued this evening (Sunday) by Hampshire Constabulary, said: "Ryan Scott McKinlay, aged 36, of Gosport, Hampshire, was travelling as a passenger on a Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB) on the afternoon of Friday, June 19, 2015 when a collision occurred with a larger motorboat, which had been carrying the RIB on the Solent earlier the same day.

"Mr McKinlay was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead on Friday evening.

"All immediate next-of-kin have been informed. His body has been formally identified. A post-mortem examination to help establish the cause of death will take place in due course.

"Officers would like to thank all partner agencies and members of the public for their ongoing co-operation and assistance with police enquiries so far."

Anyone with information, or who saw the collision in Osborne Bay, between 4.45pm and 5pm on Friday, June 19, can contact Hampshire Constabulary by calling 101
